Track 1, “Wasteland,” opens the album with an ambient, evolving soundscape and establishes the sonic world of the project. This song is inspired by the amazing cover of the “Dune” soundtrack done by Miles Kvndra on the Moog Subsequent 25. “Wasteland” is performed by one single synthesizer instrument. Okay, technically there are several synths involved here, but they are used as additional voices in different octaves- not unlike an organ. The performance of this instrument is much like pulling out different stops to achieve different timbres. One unique feature of the instrument is that it uses a continuous control of the sub oscillator’s pitch to loosely and imperfectly play the bass part entirely free from the intervals found in a chromatic scale. The piece is by nature improvisational and is never quite the same from performance to performance.
